Futsal Champions

Futsal Champions

Yesterday on the 29th of November we played Futsal in the division 1 final. We played against Fairfield wave. They were the only team we hadn’t beaten. Last week we drew against them 2-2 but this week we beat them 6-2 for the trophy.

They played really well but they didn’t play as a team. They had a major go-to man but we played as one. Cam’s brother Jack, his mum, Andrea and Carter's brother, Fletcher were our coaches. They helped us a lot.
By Corey.

I was keeper for the whole game and they kept passing around us to their go-to man who has a strong shot but somehow I managed to only let him score once. I feel that the main reason we won was because our passing and the fact we played as a unit. I’m really glad we pulled off a victory. By Adam.

On Tuesday we played futsal in the final vs Fairfield Wave. Our coaches for the game were my brother Jack and Carter’s brother Fletcher and of course my super coach
Mum, Andrea. They really helped us in the all the games especially the hard games that we played.

More Science!

Yesterday we did a science experiment with chalk, water and felt pen. The aim was to observe what will happen if we put a piece of chalk and place it in water. The method was to use a felt pen to make a coloured line around a piece of chalk. Then place the piece of chalk in a glass with 0.5cm of water in it. Observe what happens every 5 minutes. Repeat using a different colour. In the end the felt pen line was all the way at the top of the piece of chalk. For the brown felt line on the piece of chalk it had a lot of different colours in the end of the science experiment. I really enjoyed doing this science experiment yesterday.

Year 5 Camp

Year 5 Camp
At Waiora
When we first got there we unpacked and settled into our bunkrooms. Some boys had a chalet with four people in one bunk room  and 1 or 2 parents in each chalet. One of the groups when we first got there got to abseil. But first they had to practise on smaller ropes then we did the big one it was really scary at the first part but overall it was really fun. On Thursday we had free time for a while so we got the cricket set out and  started doing some pitches with the bull and bat then Brent saw us playing out of the kitchen window so he came out and told us some rules of cricket then a heap of kids started to play then we ended up with pitchers, batters and fielders. Shelby stayed in for ages with batting. Malak and Ousama should be in the Black Caps when they’re and older they are that good at batting.

Chalk Chromography

On the 31st of October room 13 got a glass with 0.5ml of water, and then we got a chalk and a pen then we made a line with the pen and put it in the water for five minutes. After five minutes all the colours were bleeding. Then we went for another five minutes and when the another five minutes the colours went up to the top.  We watched it for another 10 minutes. During the ten minutes the colours reached the top of the chalk. After the 10 minutes we had another look and the line from the top was starting to bleed down the chalk. By Connor

Science in Room 13

In Room 13 we have been doing science. Our first experiment was fermentation ( sugar, water and yeast). It turned out frothy and smelly with a brown colour. How we did it is get lukewarm water and mix yeast and white sugar. For the fermentation we will be changing the  type of sugar (e.g: honey, caster sugar, raw sugar, golden syrup and see if fermentation still happens. We might be make a ginger beer bug to make homemade ginger beer.

Susie Bates- Olympic Ambassador

Today we were so fortunate to meet Susie Bates.  She is a famous NZ Cricketer for the White Ferns (she is the captain).  She has also played basketball for NZ as well.
She said that the most important things were; friendship, respect, and excellence when playing sports. She also said to never give up on your dreams, and to try new sports so you can see
what sport you like the best, or you are the best at.
Charlie, Zach, Iziah and Mariah had a game of Knock Out against her.
We really enjoyed her company and learnt lots from her.

He talked to us about flight (our art visit topic).  Once we were settled into the art studio John taught us painting techniques and then let us be creative as we got busy painting birds. . The art is on display in Room 13 if you want to pop in and see it.

Woodwork

In the seniors we have all chosen a topic. We go to learn our chosen topic every Friday morning. I have chosen woodwork.
We started off with making cardboard boats and practising using tools.
We have learnt different ways to make it easier to saw, hammer, chisel and drill. We have used clamps, hammers, drills, saws, sandpaper and chisels.
We are working on making little wooden boats. First we measured out our wood then we had to saw it, we sanded the rough edges, cut our mast to the right length and measure out our sails.
We have also made pencil holders we had to drill, sand and use a hot poker to put on our design.

Friday Project- Architecture

My Friday project is Architecture in Mrs Brown's class.
We design our dream houses on a app called Sketch Up.
A couple of weeks before we went on a field trip to lots of buildings that were in construction it was really cool and exciting. On the way back to school the architect, (Cam) stopped at the bakery and bought us all a massive brownie each then we went back to school and carried on with our dream houses. By the end of week I think we will have some awesome houses made on Sketch Up and then next term we get to pick a completely new project like wood work ,engines,  robotics, music, dance, cooking and stuff like that.

Friday Project

Hi we are Kate and Amber. We are in the Caring for Animals group for the Friday project. The Friday project is a thing where everyone in the senior syndicate chose a project to learn about. We chose the animals group. So far we have been to the groomers and had a visit from the pet warehouse. This week we are having a visit from Nicola the vet. We are also raising funds for the SPCA by having a dress up as an animal for the day. The fundraising part of it is that people can bring a gold coin donation or a can of pet food for the animals in need. We have learning journals to show what we have learnt from caring and working for animals.

Thanks,
Kate and Amber

Science at OBHS

This week on 11th May 15 Senior Syndicate Students got the opportunity to go to Otago Boys High School to do some super science. We had Mr Ashdown and he told us how to extract D.N.A. from a Kiwi fruit. It was the most fun that I have had since yesterday. We got to go loco like the hulk when we were smashing the Kiwi fruit. After that we used a bunsen burner and heat 4cm of water. Then we put the bag of kiwi fruit in the boiling water and waited for 2 mins. After 2 mins we folded filter paper and put it in a test tube and extracted the small strings on the surface. Once the class was over Mr Hall A.K.A (The principal) brought us ice blocks.

Every second week in Room 13 we have been learning the Mandarin language. Our Mandarin teacher is Rebecca (Yu Ting) she teaches mandarin in all the Senior Syndicate classes. We also played a game by counting up to 5 and hiding an object, if they got closer to the object we shouted louder and when they got further away we went quieter. She taught us how to do hand actions to count to 10 as well.

Flag Referendum

Last week the year fives and sixes did a flag referendum. What we did was we had a post box and we had a scrutineer,  a counter and a  returning officer.  What the scrutineer does is all the checking and making sure the counter does not cheat. The Returning Officer  gave all the voting slips out and  the counter does all the counting. The end results are in and it was 49 for the current flag and the 40 for new one. So the new one was out voted.

The Match

I felt my heart beating as I walked onto the pitch.  It was a sunny summer’s day and I was with my team. I looked over my shoulder to see my family’s smiling faces.  Joe scored the first goal. Tim had made 2 great saves. But while we were celebrating the opposition scored. That made the score 1-1 with 2 minutes to go.
I retrieved the ball from a through pass. Racing down the field, time ticking away. I drew back my foot to shoot and just as I was bringing my foot down, a small coin fell onto by boot. I stared at it. Ten seconds to go. I couldn’t shoot with my good foot with the coin on it but I couldn’t not shoot. I lined up my foot and kicked. The little coin went flying and landed on the face of the goalie. A few moments later the ball flew into the net. “GOAL!” my team screamed.
It had been  a good day we were playing a match at half time at Forsyth Barr Stadium at the Southern United Game. I never knew so much could happen at half of a soccer match. I enjoyed playing that match at half time. It was an excellent experience.

The Race

The Race
It was an AWESOME day in Queenstown and this is why.
It was a really sunny day and me and my family were going to go on the luge. In no time we were on the gondola going up and in the middle of the ride it stopped. For some reason, and since we were moving quite fast when it stopped, it swayed back and forth. IT WAS FREAKY!. But soon it started again YAY!. Finally I’m out of that death trap….. ‘Woohoo’ that was the sound of me zooming down the luge. Me and my Dad were racing down leaving mum and Jess behind. “NO!” BANG. that was the sound of me losing control and me crashing and my dad zooming past and taking the lead. It really, really hurt but I hauled my kart back on the track and hopped in. I started gaining speed……. It was neck & neck between me and Dad. Never do what I did next. I went and banged into dad and he lost control and banged the corner barrier I passed him and went across the finish line. YES I WON!
But now my dad was furious and seeked revenge but that’s a different story….

Year 6 Camp

Last week the Year sixes went on school camp at Iona. We did a lot of fun activities like Archery/air rifles/raft building/kayaking,yachting/confidence course/the gorge trip.
The gorge trip was a new activity. It included ziplining, abseiling and rock climbing. We had 2 instructors called Cam and Tim.  We also went on a campout. One of the parents ran out of the bush screaming and yelling. We ate pikelets and went down a big steep hill in the dark.

On the last night all the parents were waiters for tea. After tea that night we had a year 6 dance. We waltzed and had a disco. Every day we went to the swimming hole the water was warm and there were lots of big rocks to sit on. We also went on the slide,  it's really steep and really fast you have to have people to catch you at the bottom.

One of the parents on the confidence course got wiped out. They got a HUGE bruise from the balancing beam. Miss Robinson got the best time trial on the confidence course.

Camp Iona was an amazing experience.
